John Lewis: could its 2015 Christmas ad feature the track 'Half The World Away'?

John Lewis' Christmas ad could feature an iteration of the famous track 'Half The World Away', according to industry whisperings.

Though unconfirmed, Marketing understands the song is in the running to feature in the stalwart's 2015 Christmas campaign, fuelling speculation about the content of the festive spot.

John Lewis' Christmas campaign, which typically breaks in the first week of November, has fast become the most important ad in the festive calendar, thanks to a loyal fan base.

In fact, some consumers have already taken to Twitter in recent weeks to decry "I'm only excited for Christmas so I can see the John Lewis advert" and "[I'm] refusing to buy Christmas stuff until I see the John Lewis Christmas advert".

On Sunday during an ITV X Factor break, there was a teaser of Adele's new track prompting some Twitter users to start speculating she could feature on the John Lewis ad.

Coupled with the rise of Shazam, music is becoming an increasingly critical asset in ad campaigns and John Lewis has a history of making covers famous.

Last year Tom Odell covered John Lennon's 'Real Love' in the much-loved Monty the Penguin spot and in 2013 pop star Lily Allen created a version of Keane's 'Somewhere Only We Know' for animated ad The Bear and the Hare. Its 2012 Snowman advert featured a cover of the Frankie Goes to Hollywood track 'The Power of Love', by Gabrielle Aplin.

In 2011 it ran a melancholic cover of famous The Smiths’ song 'Please Please Let Me Get What I Want'; in 2010 Ellie Goulding covered Elton John’s 'Your Song' and in 2009 it featured a folk cover of Guns N’ Roses’ 'Sweet Child O’ Mine'.

John Lewis said there were "a number [of tracks] still under consideration".

A spokesperson said: "Speculation about every element of our Christmas advert happens every year. However we can confirm that at this point in time, neither the track nor the artist have been confirmed."
