The US financial services company celebrates the Hindu festival with the gift of electricity to rural Indian towns
MUMBAI — This Diwali, Western Union has pledged to donate a portion of its transactions toward lighting up the lives of some of the 300 million Indians who live in villages without electricity. In addition to a donation of Rs 20 lakh ($30,750), the financial-services company will donate an amount per remittance made to India during the festive period ending Nov. 30.
The initiative is part of a global campaign from Western Union themed "The Chain of Betters." Communicating the effort in India is an online film that tells the story of Manoj Pandey, who returns home after 10 years to his village to witness something the electrification of his village.
