Watch: Verizon challenges stereotypes of minority males

Its film highlights the Verizon Innovative Learning program, which brings tech and STEM education to minority males in underserved schools and communities

Verizon has created a short film called "You Don’t Know Me," urging viewers to reconsider stereotypes about young men of color and see their potential as future tech innovators.

The telecommunications giant unveiled the film this week during a three-day, Verizon-hosted summit that brought 100 minority middle-school boys to San Francisco.

The film opens with a hooded black male who says, "Look at me. What you perceive creates an illusion of what I am. You don’t know me."

A number of young men of color are then shown working with robots, 3D printers, solar panels, and building code.

The film highlights the Verizon Innovative Learning program, which brings tech and STEM education to minority males in underserved schools and communities. The program, which started last June, has reached more than 100,000 students

Lagrant Communications and Finn Partners are overseeing PR for the initiative. Gyrate Media made the film, which was directed by Michael Mantz and his filmmaking team, Already Alive.
