VOWSS shines spotlight on the best short films and advertising made by women this year

Selma Ahmed and Genevieve De Rohan Willner, a creative team at Adam & Eve/DDB, were among the winners at the VOWSS showcase at Cannes Lions, which recognises the best short films and advertising made by women.

It is the second annual VOWSS, which is a partnership between The Voice of a Woman Film Festival and SheSays, the global mentorship organisation for women.

Ahmed and De Rohan Willner won the Rising Star award at the VOWSS this year. The Adam & Eve/DDB team has created work for H&M such as last year’s karaoke mash-up set in Tokyo and starring Naomi Campbell.

The Best Writer/Director prize went to director Sasha Rainbow for Life’s What You Make It, a music video for the band Placebo filmed at an electronic waste dump in Ghana.

Bianca Guimarães, a creative director at BBDO New York, took home the first VOWSS award for Creative Direction of "Monica Lewinsky in real life," an anti-cyberbullying PSA.

Laura Jordan-Bambach, the chief creative officer of Mr President and co-founder of SheSays, said: "Over the last 12 months there has been a sea change around gender inequality and sexual harassment. So it’s a fitting moment to celebrate the achievements of all women, with some of the best short films, branded content and advertising across the globe, and to award the brilliant female creative directors, directors and rising stars of the industry behind them."

The VOWSS is sponsored by Mr President, creative media group Rise and Facebook Creative Shop, with support from Frank & Lively, Finchfactor, HappyDown and The Mill.
