In the year of a bigger-than-ever festival and the introduction of a new media awards category, Andy Sandoz, D&AD's 2015/16 president, picks his favourite entries ahead of tonight's show. Cue paints with no names, Jonathan Glazer's surreal genius and a short stay in Vincent van Gogh's bedroom.

Channel 4 Rebrand

Agency: 4Creative • Client: Channel 4 • Jury: Branding

I can remember first seeing this fresh, energetic and at times damn right weird retelling of a branding icon. I love the crystalline origin of the logo blocks and the versatility, energy and attitude they carry throughout the channel identity. TV is better for having it, and I really enjoyed watching the Jonathan Glazer-directed work.

The World Addressed

Agency: what3words • Client: what3words • Jury: Creativity for Good

This idea takes a minute or two to work out – the three words hardly make sense. But this is tech brilliantly applied for human benefit. Once you get your head around this new way of providing an address, anywhere, for everyone, then you start to imagine the positive impact and possibilities such a simple and massive platform can have going forward.

MakeUp Genius

Agency: McCann Paris • Client: L’Oréal Paris • Jury: Mobile Marketing

This is just witchcraft, it’s that effective. I tried it, really quite enjoyed it and sent the results to my wife. She didn’t bat an eyelash, thinking I was wearing the real thing. The tech works so well – the speed, the ability to try on the latest look now, to capture, share and buy. Hot.

Nameless Paints

I’ve done hours of colour theory and painted gouache wheels in my past. I find this such a simple and beautiful way to explore an amazing facet of life and creativity. It’s not so much about the paint and what it’s meant to be for – it’s much more about the possibility of what you can do with it.

Under Armour Michael Phelps

While technology promises we can do anything, it’s important to stop and celebrate the enduring majesty of a really great film. The craft in narrative, art direction, editing, writing and music all creating a powerful, emotional piece. Stirring stuff.

The Fox and the Star

Illustration is my first love and, after recent years of digital digital digital, I’m coming back to the craft of the book through my children’s eyes. This work is simply beautiful.

A piece as cheeky as the tealeaf stars themselves. The idea is great, but the way it’s executed makes it for me. The music and cartoon faces lend it such energy and character. A really unique and punky piece perfectly aimed at the right audience for an app download.

Van Gogh BnB

Oh, I love this. I want to step into that painting. Sit on the chair. Jump on that bed. Just imagine waking up in there! Magic – simple idea and looks really, really fun to make.

500 Years of Stories

Agency: Grey London  • Client: Tate  • Jury Press: Advertising

The visual restraint in this piece adds incredibly to its story. It’s so simply evocative, it really draws you in. A powerful show of writingand typographic design delivered with a rabbit punch. Oof. Winded.

Security Moms

Agency: Ogilvy Brasil  • Client: Sport Club do Recife  • Jury: Media

This idea makes me so very happy. Mums bossing it at the football equals no fighting and more hugs. Total six-pointer.
