Sandwich chain backs away slowly after initially showing support

Subway and Jared Fogle have "mutually agreed" to suspend their relationship following the spokesman’s involvement in a child porn investigation, the company said.

"Subway and Jared Fogle have mutually agreed to suspend their relationship due to the current investigation," a Subway spokesman said Tuesday in a statement. "Jared continues to cooperate with authorities and he expects no actions to be forthcoming. Both Jared and Subway agree that this was the appropriate step to take."

The sandwich chain addressed the issue in a pair of tweets, as well. The first, issued early Tuesday afternoon, suggested the company was still looking for a way to support Fogle, noting that he was likely just a secondary figure in the investigation

The second tweet, issued simultaneous to the release, was a bit more resigned.

According to news reports, Fogle’s Indiana home had been raided by federal authorities on Monday for undisclosed reasons. Two weeks earlier, Russell Taylor, executive director of the Fogle Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to teaching kids healthy eating habits, was arrested on child pornography charges. Subway and Fogle quickly announced the dissolution of their relationship with Taylor.

Fogle became a spokesman for Subway 15 years ago after he lost more than 200 pounds on a diet that relied heavily on the chain’s sandwiches. So popular were his commercials that he was soon known simply as "Jared." He has since played a central role in Subway’s public outreach, both as a a star in commercials and a brand ambassador.

A section of the Subway website once dedicated to Jared’s story has now been taken down, as has the "Jared Pants Dance," a game that lived on the SubwayKids.com web site.

Social media erupted in response to the story, with Subway becoming a top trending topic on Tuesday. Subway has ceased all social media activity since releasing its most recent statement.
