Welsh crooner Sir Tom Jones has become the first star to plant a tree in the recently transformed LG Arena's Celebrity Wood, moments before he took to the stage last night (18 October).

The LG Arena 'Celebrity Wood' is a project to encourage every performer to plant a tree at the venue, which recently underwent a £29m transformation.

Jones' concert was part of LG Arena's Opening Season 2009, which will run until 31 December.

"This was a very important milestone marking the Opening Season of the new LG Arena, which is set to become the ultimate entertainment destination following this major refurbishment," said NEC Group director of arenas Phil Mead.

"We hope throughout Opening Season and over the years to come, other stars will follow suit and plant a tree as a lasting reminder of their performance here."

The Celebrity Wood is near the arena's VIP entrance, which concert goers walk past.

The LG Arena also has its very own Living Wall, featuring 15,000 shrubs. The installation is linked to a dedicated recycling centre on the NEC site.
