My side hustle: why I write for a magazine that doesn't make women 'feel shit'

LA Ronayne, creative director, Stink Studios spends her spare time writing for women's "smart" magazine Riposte and believes that the advertising industry could learn a lot from the recent 'boom' in independent publishing.

Ronayne became involved in Riposte through her friendship with founder and editor Danielle Pender and as a writer in the industry, saw it as an opportunity to hone her editorial skills whilst being able to "nerd out" on bold and talented women.

She said: "Riposte is billed as a smart magazine for women and so many women's magazines these days are about '10 ways to put on lipstick' and 'how you should feel shit about yourself this month', whereas Riposte has always been this incredible driving force in aspirational, really fascinating women, in a really positive way."

Launched in 2013, the biannual magazine covers issues including music, travel and politics and is art directed by creative director Shaz Madani. Now sold across the globe, it is also one of many independent publications to launch in recent years.

She added: "There's such an incredible boom happening in independent publishing at the minute and with publications like Riposte and so many more that you can go and visit in shops like MagCulture. I think there's so much that the advertising industry at large can pick up and learn from the boom."

Ronayne says her side hustle aides her work at Stink by helping her to think more creatively about solving "brand problems" and that it has also exposed her to a network of talented contributors that she hopes to collaborate with in the future.

"Sometimes you just need to give up weekends and friends and boyfriends and girlfriends and your life a little bit to really see something through but it's more than worth doing," she added.
