Year in review

OMD Group UK, the home of OMD UK and Manning Gottlieb OMD, proved its resilience during another turbulent year. 2017 began with some major global account losses: Walgreens Boots, including its £72m UK business, departed, followed by Carlsberg and PSA Group. There were serious questions about how the UK operation was going to recover, particularly as chief executive Dan Clays had to say goodbye to a number of his senior lieutenants. However, several notable wins, including Barclays and Ocado, saved the second half of the year.

Manning Gottlieb OMD had a smoother time under chief executive Tim Pearson, who has assembled a strong top team. The agency picked up a record awards haul, including gongs for John Lewis and Age UK, and was a contender for Agency of the Year at the Media Week Awards. The biggest win was Intuit QuickBooks’ £20m business and its two losses were resignations. Client retention was an impressive 97%.

Omnicom has a reputation for strong media planning and Manning Gottlieb OMD continued that tradition by launching IMPACT, an interactive planning hub. OMD UK is set to unveil its own new planning process this year.

OMD Group UK also worked hard at diversity and inclusion, supporting Omnicom People Engagement Network and multicultural marketing agency OMG Ethnic.

Group headcount has fallen from 791 in 2015 to 660 last year – a sign of tough decisions taken, such as closing M2M in September 2016. OMD Group UK looks fighting fit to weather the current wave of media reviews.
