Heineken beer brand Desperados opened up London's Truman Brewery chimneys for the first time in 26 years last Friday (7 August) as part of its City Hack challenge.

The chimneys smoked red, yellow and green for residents and visitors around the building’s Brick Lane location. The stunt was celebrated with a three-hour DJ set on the streets of Shoreditch from Aaron Beveney.

The DJ belongs to the London City Hack team, known as The Big Smoke. The squad is competing with groups in Bristol and Manchester across four challenges themed around ‘hacking’ their cities and throwing parties throughout the summer.

Alex Donald, The Big Smoke’s promoter, said: "We wanted to do something really different that would stand out, and what better way to hack our city than get the Truman Brewery’s chimneys smoking again after 26 years."

The Desperados-sponsored initiative is taking place in collaboration with electronic music specialist UKF. The winning team, which is made up of DJs, artists, designers and promoters, will be awarded a 12-month mentorship with UKF.

The final showdown between all three groups will be held at Building Six in London on 25 September.

City Hack has been developed by agencies RPM, Adam&Eve DDB, SMV and Cow PR.
