In pictures: Theme Traders takes event profs back to childhood

Event design and production company Theme Traders hosted a secret event for clients and press last night (9 April) themed around a retro children's birthday.

The event, entitled #freakyThursday, took place in north London. Guests were told to arrive at Willesden Green Underground station, where a bus was there to drive them to the unknown destination.

The bus journey set the theme for the night, with guests offered party bags and bottles of a Panda Pop cocktail mix. Once off the bus they were guided to ‘Tommy’s birthday party’, which featured a room filled with balloons, sandwiches, crisps, face painting, champagne served in party cups and a DJ set complete with songs from S Club 7, B*Witched and 5ive.

Guests were then led down the street to Theme Traders’ main warehouse near Cricklewood station. Here they were invited to draw on the walls and ceiling with crayons as they danced to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and drink cans of Hooch, run through walls made of wallpaper, play in a swimming pool of polystyrene chips and snack on treats provided special guest caterer The London Kicthen from an interactive food wall.

The losers of a game of musical statues were then brought to the FOMO clinic, where they were treated for a Fear of Missing Out by nurses, before heading to the Sugar High Club – a psychedelic airport lounge. The final surprise was a mass food fight to the soundtrack of Gladiators.

Becky Handley, deputy director of projects at Theme Traders, told Event: "The idea was to produce kid’s memory of a party, rather than a party itself, which gave us the opportunity to make it completely random, distorted and a bigger than it actually would have been.

"These events are an opportunity for us to do something we really want to do and showcase, rather than what clients ask us to do. It’s all the things we dream up throughout the year in one really condensed experience."
