Pick of the week: Wimbledon makes its voice heard in the football cacophony

Simon Gwynn is ready to watch some goddamn tennis.

We’ve been spoiled with top notch creativity around this summer’s World Cup. Top of the pack is certainly the BBC’s animated tapestry, which somewhat overshadowed ITV’s own splendid, chaotic montage. The FA’s film announcing the England squad, meanwhile, brought something undeniably (and for a country of England’s pedigree, inappropriately) joyous to the proceedings.

In a World Cup year it’s easy to forgot that there are still smaller balls flying – especially when some numpty decided to put the Wimbledon men’s final and the football finale on the same day.

Luckily, Wimbledon have also knocked out a corker of a film. It might not quite be the breathtaking technical accomplishment of the BBC World Cup ad, but it’s still a stunning, chameleonlike animation that demonstrates why the form is so well suited to telling a big story in a short space of time.

All together now: come on, Tim!
