Oxfam reports more shoppers at charity shops but fewer donations


LONDON - Donations to Oxfam shops have fallen 12% so far this year - its first decline in donations for eight years.

The drop is a result of cash-strapped consumers buying fewer items and therefore having less to give to charity shops. Fewer people moving house has also led to a fall in donations of household goods.

However, demand for donated goods remains high - the number of shoppers in Oxfam shops remains at the same level as 2008. Sales also remained strong last year - up 5% on the previous year - thanks to initiatives including the charity's clothing exchange partnership with Marks & Spencer and the opening of fashion boutiques.
