Norm Macdonald plays the colonel in new KFC ads

Comedian takes over role from his former SNL associate

In May of this year, Wieden + Kennedy Portland brought back KFC's mascot and founder Colonel Harland Sanders played by Saturday Night Live comic Darrell Hammond. This autumn, a new actor is playing the colonel— fellow SNL alum Norm Macdonald.

In one spot, Macdonald is watching Hammond playing Sanders on TV and scoffs "Hey, that's not real Colonel Sanders— I'm the real Colonel Sanders!" Other spots have Macdonald's own original recipe of wisecracks and non-sequesters, such as commenting on how young people break-dance all day.

"Other than not quite looking like him, his voice being different, and his inability to cook the world's best chicken, we thought Norm was the perfect choice to play the Real Colonel." says Kevin Hochman, chief marketing officer KFC US.
