LONDON - The Evening Standard's new owner Alexander Lebedev and incoming editor Geordie Greig will have been reminded of the difficult task ahead today as the February ABCs show the Standard down 3.69% year on year.

The Standard posted a circulation figure of 277,522 for the period 26 January to 22 February, down 5.27% on January's numbers and including 132,682 multiple copy sales.

Greig, who started at the Standard on Monday (2 March), promised an optimistic paper in his opening leader, a sentiment that will be needed throughout the newspaper's management, though the paper suffered less than many national dailies.

London's free papers recorded steady circulations. City AM was up 1.2% year on year, 7.95% month on month, to 94,626.

Thelondonpaper was up 1.51% year on year to 500,824, while London Lite held steady, up 0.1% year on year to 401,250.

Metro London, the capital's largest free circulation paper recorded, a 2.31% rise year on year at 733,882.
