McDonald's home delivery could be on its way

McDonald's is "uniquely positioned to become the global leader in delivery", the fast-food chain said yesterday, as it announced that it could be bringing home delivery to markets including the UK.

In the brand’s five biggest markets – the US, France, the UK, Germany and Canada – 75% of the population lives within three miles of a McDonald’s restaurant, it said, making a comprehensive delivery offer an achievable prospect.

The statement added that McDonald’s was already a leading provider of delivered food in markets including China, South Korea and Singapore, where delivery sales are almost $1bn. It added: "No other food company in the world has this reach and ability to be this convenient to so many customers through delivery."

The announcement on delivery came as part of a long-term global growth plan revealed at the company’s investor day in Chicago, and also explored opportunities from improved digital technology and continued restaurant upgrades.

Chief executive Steve Easterbrook said: "To deliver sustained growth, we have to attract more customers, more often. Our greatest opportunities reside at the very heart of our brand  our food, value and the customer experience.

"Through enhanced technology to elevate and modernize the customer experience, a focus on the quality and value of our food and redefined convenience through delivery, we have a bold vision for the future and the urgency to act on it."
