ITV's Love Island bows out with 4.2m viewers

LONDON - The final of ITV reality show 'Love Island' bowed out of the schedules last night with more than 4m tuning in to watch winning pair Callum Best and Bianca Gascoigne snatch the title of top couple and the £100,000 prize.

According to unofficial TV overnights, the show, broadcast at 9pm on ITV1, peaked at 4.2m and averaged 3.8m viewers tuning in to see Bianca, stepdaughter of England football legend Paul Gascoigne, make an emotional phonecall to her mother Sheryl telling her she could not wait to get home.

According to sources, ITV is now considering a third series that would not involve celebrities and would be more like a 'Big Brother' style format, but with a desert location rather than a Hertfordshire studio.

Despite being the show's finale, Love Island was beaten in the ratings by the BBC's police drama 'Murphy's Law' starring James Nesbitt and broadcast at 9pm, which pulled in an average of 5.5m viewers to claim a 24% share of the total audience.
The show did beat off all competition from its commercial rivals, with Channel 4's 'Time Team: Big Royal Dig' unearthing 2.7m viewers, or a 12% average total audience.

On BBC Two, 'Betjeman and Me' managed to pull in 1.7m viewers in its 9pm timeslot, or 7.4% of the total viewing audience.

Five pulled in an average of 1.3m viewers for its documentary 'Honey, I Suckled the Kids', bringing in 6% of the total viewing audience.
