ING walks out on Renault F1 following 'Crashgate'

LONDON - ING has abandoned itstitle sponsorship of Renault following the team's 'Crashgate' scandal, in which driver Nelson Piquet Jr was instructed to deliberately crash his car mid-race.

Dutch-owned ING had already announced in February that it would not be renewing its sponsorship once it expires at the end of the current season.

Renault has also lost Mutua Madrilena as a sponsor, although the company will continue to back the team's former F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso. Mutua Madrilena had been a partner of Renault F1 since 2005.

The news comes just two days after the European Sponsorship Association (ESA) warned rights holders and governing bodies that they must clamp down on cheating or risk backlash from sponsors (Marketing 23 September).
