Grammy Awards draw lowest audience in 7 years

Strong performances from Kendrick Lamar, 'Hamilton' cast aren't enough to lift Monday night telecast

An estimated 23.73 million viewers tuned in for "The 58th Annual Grammy Awards" on CBS Monday night, making it the ceremony’s lowest-rated broadcast since 2009, when it drew 19.05 million viewers. This year’s audience represented a small drop from last year, when 24.82 million viewers tuned in on.

The results are based on the fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen from 8 to 11 p.m. (excluding the 11 p.m. half hour and pending updates). Comparisons to previous "Grammy Awards" show telecasts are based on the Live + Same Day data.

Results among key adults 18-49 was a 7.4 rating/22 share, which also tied as the lowest since 2009. Last year, the demo rating for "The Grammys" was an 8.3.

One possible culprit for the low ratings was the unusual Monday night telecast. After years of airing the ceremony on Sunday night, the network decided to move it to Monday because of the long holiday weekend.

The competing four networks, as expected, took a hit opposite ""The Grammys." ABC and Fox tied for the distant No. 2 spot — ABC care of "The Bachelor" and "Castle," and Fox featuring dramas "The X-Files" and "Lucifer." NBC, which featured sitcoms "Superstore" and "Telenovela" and tired "The Biggest Loser" finished a distant fourth.  And The CW’s combination of 8 p.m. special "Mortal Kombat X: Machinima’s Chasing the Cup" and an encore telecast of "D.C.’s Legends of Tomorrow" barely registered.
