Designed for use with Iphone and Android devices, Pokémon Go will employ augmented reality (AR) to combine players’ real and virtual worlds.
The technology will use location information to encourage players to search for Pokémon as they explore elements of their real-world environment.
Niantic, the company founded by Google Earth co-creator John Hanke, is developing Pokémon Go.
The firm is also teaming up with Nintendo to create a wearable device known as Pokémon Go Plus for use with the new development.
It will connect to smartphones using Bluetooth technology and alert users to events taking place within the Pokémon Go game using an LED light and vibration. Players will also be able to catch Pokémon or perform other actions within the game by pressing a button on the device.
Pokémon Go will be available for download on the App Store and Google Play in 2016.
