Family Equality PSA details LGBTQ+ parents' rigorous path to parenthood

The spot, created by TBWA\Chiat\Day New York, shows the obstacles that LGBTQ+ people face to build a family.

Parenthood is filled with obstacles, but LGBTQ+ people face systemic difficulties that make starting a family daunting in a different way.

Family Equality’s PSA, "Love, Lawyers & The Government," centers on two dads saying goodnight to their son, who asks, "Where do babies come from?"

The dads are surprised but launch into a detailed explanation on "having a baby."

"Well, when two daddies love each other and they want to have a baby, first they talk to a lawyer about their options," one dad explains.

The pair share information about lawmakers and social services and call their attorney to explain the process further. They even ring another same-sex couple to explain how one parent gave birth to their child, while the other had to legally adopt them.

"Twelve to 24 months later, assuming all the paperwork goes through, parents can have a wonderful kid — just like you," the dad concludes.

However, that’s not exactly the same story their son heard.

The PSA aims to encourage people to support legislation like The Equality Act and the John Lewis Every Child Deserves a Family Act to remove barriers for LGBTQ+ people’s path to parenthood.
