The milestone comes four years after parent brand Facebook reached the figure. Facebook’s active user base now stands at more than 1.65bn – around the population of China and the US combined.
Last August, Mark Zuckerberg announced in a Facebook post that the social platform had also recorded a billion users in a single day for the first time. And in February, Facebook-owned WhatsApp also reached a billion active users. Facebook’s other major social platform, Instagram, is growing steadily, and now has more than half a billion users.
On the back of the news, the company’s shares hit an all-time high of £121.92.
"People use Messenger to connect with the people and businesses they care most about," said Facebook in its blog. "They make plans, share dreams, send payments, tell jokes, play games, let their loved ones know they’re thinking of them and much, much more."
