Sophie Linin, the events supervisor at historic London venue Middle Temple, spoke to Event about her love of history, work with Red Bull and plans to live within the Tower of London.

Prior to joining Middle Temple, Linin was employed as special events co-ordinator at the London Eye, and she most recently held the role of events co-ordinator at Merlin Events.

I got into the event industry because… I fell into the industry after years of working in hospitality while trying to survive as an actress. I was very fortunate to be offered some great opportunities and one day I suddenly realised that this was actually what I wanted to do. I’ve never looked back.

I have worked here since June 2015.

I was attracted to this particular role because joining Middle Temple fulfils my dream of working at a historic venue. I have a passion for the past and a love of events – it really is the perfect combination.

Not many people know that I am busy studying for a BA Honours Degree in history with Open University while working. I also appeared on stage, screen and in television commercials in my former career as an actress.

The best event I’ve been involved in was the Red Bull Revolutions in Sound event on the London Eye. Each capsule came alive with one legendary club night, resident DJs and guest stars, all the while guests partied to a silent disco at the foot of the Eye.

It was perhaps the most completely mental event I’ve ever done, but it was so much fun and everyone involved was buzzing with the enormity of it.

If I could do it all over again I would do it all the same. I don’t believe in regrets, just in seizing every opportunity that presents itself.

The one thing I can’t stand is when people moan constantly about their job. Everyone has bad days, but if you really don’t like what you’re doing, then leave and do something else.

Outside of work I spend my time writing both factual and fictional pieces about medieval and renaissance history.

If money were no object I would purchase the Tower of London from Historic Royal Palaces and live in one of the towers.

If I could switch places with anyone else in the industry it would be… There are so many people I admire and so many venues I would love to work at. I still feel like I’m at the beginning of my career so I’d like to swap places with myself in 20 years. I am fascinated to see where I end up.

If I ruled the event industry I would ensure that everyone always gets a solid eight hours sleep and at least one weekend off a month.
