Nick Kenton, the head of sales at Marylebone Cricket Club, spoke to Event about his 2013 Ashes experience, dream to conquer the world's best golf courses, and making sociable events compulsory.

I got into the event industry because no two events are the same – I love the variety and helping clients achieve their goals. I’ve also forged some great friendships within the industry and enjoy how social and welcoming the sector is.

I have worked here since March 2011. My role has evolved over that time and I am now responsible for commercial sales for both meetings and events and match day hospitality.

I was attracted to this particular role because I am passionate about cricket so it wasn’t a difficult decision, plus the venue is stunning and world-famous. I still love walking through the Grace Gate in the morning, especially on a match day where there is such a fantastic buzz.

Not many people know that I live with four ladies – my wife and three daughters, including two-year-old twins. I spend a lot of time in the shed!

The best event I’ve been involved was the Investec Ashes Test Match at Lord’s in 2013. This was my first match as head of sales and England won in the final over on the fourth day, managing to reclaim the Ashes from Australia.

If I could do it all over again I would spend less time worrying about my life plan in my 20s. There’s been plenty of time to do that in my 30s.

The one thing I can’t stand is being late. It’s a challenge in our house to ever be on time, but we usually just about manage it.

Outside of work I spend my time at home mostly as I have a young family, but I do manage to sneak out every once in a while to watch some live music or comedy.

If money were no object I would travel around the world chalking off the 101 best golf courses to play.

If I could switch places with anyone else in the industry it would be Jackson Clark from Patch Media. We have a similar background – when we started out in the industry we were both involved in advertising, and he has managed to launch a successful business of his own. I think that anyone brave enough to get out there and launch their own business should be applauded.

If I ruled the event industry I would make sociable events compulsory – there is a huge amount of business that can be done in more relaxed settings.
