Consumer confidence failed to recover in March as concerns about Britain's referendum on EU membership hit home.

The GfK consumer confidence survey reveals that consumer confidence has remained unchanged from last month, when it hit its lowest point since December 2014.

The survey found that while households were more optimistic about their personal finances, expectations for the wider economy remained subdued.

GfK head of market dynamics Joe Staton said: "Are we seeing Brexit jitters at work now? Whilst UK consumers remain resolutely upbeat about their personal financial situation, concerns about prospects for the general economic situation continue to dampen our mood.

"Despite good economic headlines about low inflation, interest rates and prices in the shops, concerns about Brexit and the ongoing Eurozone crisis appear to be hitting home."
