Colin Smith is part of a six piece band called Lazy Heart Parade. He starred in and co-directed a music video for their new track Haunt Me.

Tell us about the project

Haunt Me is the lead track from our latest EP My Last Goodbye – a sort of love note to my muse who passed away. Often during live shows, I imagine her in the room watching me, so I wrote a script entirely from her point of view.

What was the biggest challenge when making the video?

The biggest challenge was organising the shoot. Once I got my good friend and talented director Jonny Kight (he told me to write that) involved, as well as the awesome MindsEye (he told me to write that too), it all started to take shape. Then, all of a sudden, I was like: "Holy shit – that’s in two weeks!"

Was it hard to do the video in one shot?

The one-shot was tough, but that point of view was essential to the storytelling. Jonny and I went down to Union Chapel a few times beforehand to block everything out, but it was a challenge to get it all exactly how we wanted.

However, I do think the imperfections are quite nice. Hopefully, they added to the authenticity. And, on the plus side, editing was a breeze. "I like take 14." "Me too." "Done." "Beer?"

How long have you been in a band?

I started my first band at 15 playing Nirvana, Oasis and Green Day covers around the Liverpool pub scene. My parents had to drive me to gigs and wait around until we’d finished to give us a lift back. Lazy Heart Parade are my latest project. It has been going for a few years now.

When did you get into music?

For as long as I remember, music has always been what I’ve done. I studied it at uni.

After uni, I wrote pieces for short films, plays and even ads – before I went full adman and joined the Watford course. Writing music has taken me on tours around the UK, a stint in Prague, a two year adventure on the East Coast of the US, and now it has led me to co-direct my first video. I love it.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by artists who are brutally honest, and I get stupidly excited by a phrase or thought that should typically have no business being in a song. Which is why I try to write about what I know – whether that’s my hair, a friend’s shoe collection, the 73 bus or death.

I also enjoy an uncomfortable ending to an interview.
