Adblock drives a stake into mobile browsing

Its new Adblock Browser for Android spikes ads in mobile Firefox

Ad blocking on mobile devices got a boost today when Adblock announced an Android version of Firefox that zaps ads out of the box.

Adblock Browser 1.0, available now in open beta, harnesses the mobile version of Mozilla’s open-source Firefox browser and folds in Adblock Plus for Android, the company’s mobile app.

According to Adblock Plus Lead Developer Felix Dahlke, Adblock Plus ran afoul of the Google Play store for "interference with another service or product." Moreover, because it is external to browsers, it can  only block ads over unencrypted connections.

Offering an ad-blocking browser "allows us to integrate adblocking tightly into the browsing experience, whereas we’re quite limited in most extension environments," Dahlke wrote.

"For now, our goal is to build a solid mobile browser with great ad blocking integrated. That’s also our goal during the beta: We will fix bugs and we will address usability issues, but we’re not planning to do major changes."
