Companies boarded the bandwagon for the made-up holiday

Brands were emojional on Twitter over World Emoji Day. Emojipedia founder Jeremy Burge created the "global holiday" and chose July 17 as the day to celebrate it because that is the date displayed on the iOS calendar emoji.

Emojipedia set up a website explaining that the purpose of World Emoji Day is "to spread the enjoyment that emojis bring to our lives with all those around us."

More brands are getting in on the act as well. Top PR pros recently told PRWeek how marketers are using emojis to engage consumers.
