Paddy Power forced to shelve plans to run 'offensive' TV spot

LONDON - Paddy Power has been forced to abandon plans to run its latest ad on TV after regulators feared it could cause widespread offence.

The spot, the third in a series of three ads created by the bookmaker's new ad agency Big Al's Creative Emporium, features four wheelchair-bound actors "doing a runner" on their bill from a curry house.

After the restaurant's owner gives up on chasing them, a brand spokesman consoles him by explaining that while Paddy Power can't get him his customers back, it can in some cases help get him his money back, thanks to its new Money-Back specials initiative, which gives customers the opportunity to have their stake, refunded even if their bet didn't come through.

The ad, which has been launched to coincide with next week's Cheltenham Festival, will now only run online across various social networking sites.

Big Al's Creative Emporium picked up Paddy Power's £1m advertising account last month, after a pitch against Bartle Bogle Hegarty.

The previous incumbent on the business was Karmarama, which last year created a series of quirky TV ads for the brand, featuring sporting cult heroes such as Bruce Grobbelaar and Carlton Palmer.

I have to agree that this ad whilst having a somewhat 'black-humour' to it, is actually more then a bit tasteless. I'd also suggest that the link with a bookmakers is somewhat tenuous. I wonder what BBH's approach was - ceratily way better then this I'd have thought!

I don't get it.

I thought the owner of the restaurant was going to bet on who was going to win the wheel chair race.

Offensive - on the grounds of being lame, clumsy and patronising to the viewer.

OK, so I guess this must be a prime candidtae for Turkey of the week!

it's good to see an ad which depicts people with disabilities in a non-patronising way. and the message is pretty clear to someone like me who has no understanding of how betting works - it's a cash back offer on bets. some clearly need everything spelt out in BIG letters

and what's not to like about an ad with a Frank Skinner look-a-like sporting a magnificent mullet?

Dreadful.

Really, really dreadful.

Jessica Summerfield - 12 March 2010

it's not dreadful and it's not the world's best ad. let's avoid being overly dramatic about it.

33/1 or 1 outta 33?

The idea is more disabled than the actors.
