Confectionery giant Wrigley has issued a deft response to Donald Trump's son comparing refugees to poisoned Skittles, saying: "Skittles are candy. Refugees are people."

Donald Trump Jr caused a social media storm after he published this tweet yesterday on the subject on immigration and the refugee crisis:

The tweet led to Skittles trending on Twitter.

Asked to comment by a US journalist, Denise Young, VP of corporate affairs at Wrigley Americas, issued this statement: "Skittles are candy. Refugees are people. We don't feel it's an appropriate analogy.

"We will respectfully refrain from further commentary as anything we say could be misinterpreted as marketing."

While the majority of comments on social media have focused on Trump Jnr's comments, with many criticising them strongly, others provided a satirical take on the episode:
