Some unexpected companies, such as Hello Kitty and Tidy Cats, were able to tie the canine festival to their brands on Twitter

Companies on Twitter had a howling good time Wednesday tying #NationalDogDay to their brands.

Founded in 2004 by animal advocate Colleen Paige, National Dog Day aims to "help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year, and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort," according to the National Dog Day website.

Some brands, such as AAA, used National Dog Day to address the issue of pet passenger safety.

Meanwhile, unexpected brands, such as Tidy Cats, got in on the trending #NationalDogDay hashtag on Wednesday morning by tweeting a photo of a cat expressing disdain for the national event.
